National Gas Transmission (NGT) owns and operates the high-pressure gas transmission network in Great Britain, including over 7,660 kilometers (4,760 miles) of pipe and more than 618 above-ground installations. These assets are long-lived, expensive to maintain and repair, and widely distributed geographically.
NGT embarked on a journey with Copperleaf® to prepare for the RIIO-2 regulatory period by improving its asset investment planning and project portfolio management capabilities—to deliver the highest value for its customers, today and into the future. NGT’s vision was to transform its business by integrating asset strategy, portfolio planning, investment governance, and investment delivery, within an end-to end Asset Investment Planning and Management (AIPM) process.
NGT implemented Copperleaf Portfolio™ and Copperleaf Asset™ to help the company deliver its RIIO-2 business plan as cost-effectively as possible, contributing to a 4% efficiency on capital expenditure and saving £11 million per year. These benefits are derived from the new capability to make value-based decisions on the future of the network—across the entire asset lifecycle and centered around the organization’s key strategic objectives. Our work with NGT was recognized with the Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers Project of the Year and Product of the Year awards (2021).

Enhanced project portfolio management
Prior to implementing the Copperleaf solution, NGT relied on a number of standalone systems and spreadsheets that were used within silos. Decisions were made per investment without assessing their impact on the portfolio. Copperleaf Portfolio has replaced these disconnected tools, providing employees with access to a single source of the truth for Investment Management, Portfolio Planning and Investment Governance. NGT can now run alternate scenarios and see the impact of decisions across its entire portfolio of work.
